Plymouth Rock sits on a beach in the harbor under an elaborate temple-like structure. You can walk right up to the railing and gaze down at the rock day or night. It's not much to look at, but it's exciting to think that the pilgrims were right here! History!
Woods Restaurant nearby was recommended for it's seafood.
It's just a rock. There is an app you can download with a free audio tour of the area. Each point of interest is marked so that you can play the corresponding audio.
There are a couple of monuments to the colonists in town, and the pilgrim hall museum was small but filled with artifacts from the pilgrims.
We were really interested in checking out the Plymouth Plantation. It was the last day to do so, but it was also just too cold out. It would be nice to check that out one day.
Make this part of a walk up and down the harbor. There is a nice wide sidewalk with benches and other sights to see: a re-creation of the Mayflower (check to see if it is in the harbor, or out on a trip, or out for repairs), lots of beautiful boats anchored in the harbor, many boutique shops and places to eat. There is also at least one company that will take you on a harbor cruise. There was such a lovely breeze the day I was there, and people were out enjoying a stroll with their pets and their families. The harbor is beautiful.
I had a good time walking around. Thanksgiving day was a treat to see American history up close and personal.
The "Rock" is sort of anti-climatic but that's because Plymouth is sooo beautiful. This historical bayside town is a must see...especially when the weather is good. The downtown shops and restaurants offer great choices for whatever you're looking for. Parking can be a little tough but not like in Boston.
This Rock is much more significant than the simple stone it appears to be at first glance. There is plenty of parking around town within a 5 to 10 minute walk of the Rock. And the main museum at 75 Court Street is a must see. Plan to spend 3 hours to see everything and enjoy a meal in this historic town.
